Margao: Ravindra Bhavan, Canacona, inaugurated with much fanfare just nine months ago in Aug 2024, faced significant water leakage due to heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The leakage primarily affected the library run by the state department of art and culture located on the first floor.A large number of books were feared damaged by rainwater. The severity of the water intrusion and the incessant rain prompted the organisers to cancel the show of a tiatr scheduled for Tuesday evening. Employees of Ravindra Bhavan attempted to manage the situation and salvage the property by mopping the continuously accumulating water, but their efforts proved futile owing to the persistent leakage. As a precautionary measure, authorities temporarily disconnected power to the building until the water levels subsided.Shubham Komarpant, a councillor of the Canacona Municipal Council, accused govt of rushing with the inauguration of Ravindra Bhavan before construction was properly completed. Former chairperson Ramakant Naik Gaokar called for strict action against the contractor for negligence in the building’s construction. The controversy also sparked political reactions. Congress member Amarnath Panjikar took to social media, describing the facility as “Flooded after first rain” with “books damaged, water leaking everywhere.”He criticised govt, saying: “This is the ‘development’ under the weak & leak BJP Goa govt. Crores spent on buildings, zero on quality. Shame!”Sources associated with Ravindra Bhavan, Canacona, said immediate measures will be taken to repair the damage and plug the leakages.
